Sedges of Tasmania—hands-on identification

Join us for a hands-on workshop to deepen your understanding of Tasmania's sedges. The Cyperaceae, or sedge family, are a diverse group of flowering plants, common in many Tasmanian habitats and especially important in wet environments. They range from from the highly distinctive buttongrass, Gymnoschoenus sphaerocephalus, to cryptic annuals like some of the clubsedges, Isolepis spp. This workshop provides an opportunity to learn more about these plants and how to identify them.

Led by botanists Mark Wapstra and Phil Collier, the workshop will introduce the major Tasmanian sedge genera, including Carex, Gahnia, Isolepis, Lepidosperma and Schoenus. For each genus, there will be a brief discussion of the main distinguishing features, followed by a practical session with specimens. Participants will have the chance to examine key floral and fruit structures under magnification and practice techniques used for identification.
