Davies' waxflower (Phebalium daviesii) planting day
Threatened Plants Tasmania Inc and NRE Tas invite volunteers to register for a Davies' waxflower planting day.
Dates:
Wednesday 10th & Thursday 11th September 2025
Saturday 13th & Sunday 14th September 2025
Trip overview:
Once thought extinct, the Davies’ waxflower (Phebalium daviesii) is one of Tasmania’s rarest and most endangered species. It is currently known from a single population on the lower reaches of the George River in St Helens, north-east Tasmania. Since it’s rediscovery in the 1990s, the population has experienced approximately a 30% decline and is estimated to contain only 32 individuals.
In collaboration with Threatened Plants Tasmania, NRE Tas are planting up to 1,000 Davies’ waxflowers across four sites in September 2025. Working together at each of the four sites (all located within 20-minutes from St Helens), volunteers will work in groups of 4-5, supervised by a team leader. Volunteers can assist with such tasks as digging small holes using a trowel, planting seedlings and constructing protective wire cages. Some volunteers can assist by overseeing a small team.
This trip is managed by NRE Tas, and is open to everyone. A Threatened Plants Tasmania membership is not required.
